Womens Senior Cup Cricket Final
August 22nd
Pembroke v Malahide
Leinster Senior Cup back in the Village!
Pembroke won the toss and elected to field first on a surprisingly sunny evening in Sandymount. This decision was vindicated when Malahide lost an early wicket, but a 60 run partnership for the second wicket between Clare Shillington and Hazel Keegan put the Villagers in a strong position. Pembroke skipper Ciara Metcalfe clawed her team back into the game when she took the 2nd, 3rd and 4th wickets with successive deliveries to take a hat-trick (2 ct & 1b). Marianne Herbert joined her International colleague Clare at the wicket looking to re-build the innings. Thanks to some big hitting and good running between the wickets, Malahide finished on 118-7, Shillington top scoring with 54, Keegan 19 and Herbert 17no. Best for Pembroke was Metcalfe with 3-38.
The Brook started their reply confidently with Nikki Coffey looking in good form as they strolled along at 5 an over. Barbara McDonald took the first two wickets to fall as Malahide tried to regain control. Coffey had played superbly well for 45 (41) when she was caught behind by Aisling Gill off the bowling of Lynn Adams. With the game hanging in the balance and the light fading it was Malahide's Eimear Gill who took the game away from Pembroke, bowling an excellent spell taking six wickets for 26 off 5.2 overs. With the run rate increasing Gill bowled full and straight as 5 of her wickets were clean bowled and Pembroke finished on 109 all out with 4 balls remaining.
Malahide 118-7 20 overs.
Pembroke 109-10 19.2 overs.
Malahide win by 9 runs.
